Welcome to Bookmarked. I’m so glad you’re here. I hope that my musings on the books that I read can help inspire you to pick up a book yourself & help you find your next book.

Who are you?

I’m Abby, a 24-year-old technical writer living in Houston, TX with my boyfriend, Matt, and our rescue dog, Murphy. I graduated from the University of Michigan (go blue!) in 2016 with a degree in Communications and a minor in Digital Studies.

I’ve recently fallen back in love with reading. This summer, I read the entire Harry Potter series for the first time and it reminded me how much I love being immersed in another world. Since then, I’ve become a voracious reader and haven’t been without a book.

What do you read?

I’m currently loving psychological thrillers a la Gillian Flynn’s Gone Girl, as well as novels that address cultural issues like Small Great Things by Jodie Picoult (review here). I’m also more inclined to pick up a book if it’s being made into a TV show or movie, such as Crazy Rich Asians by Kevin Kwan (review here). I’ve always loved autobiographies – especially those that don’t take themselves too seriously, like Tina Fey’s Bossypants. I’m always trying to broaden my horizons, though, so you can expect to hear about books from all kinds of genres.

What is this?

I’m a firm believer that a good book can change you. When I finish a book, it’s hard to get it out of my head. For days afterward, I am affected. Gaining a new perspective is difficult. You can’t expect living in someone’s mind for 500 pages to be easy, but you can expect it to be rewarding.

I have so many thoughts after finishing a book that it can take some time to recalibrate to life outside those pages. To write down a synopsis, my thoughts and opinions of the quality, and what I took away from the book will be cathartic for me and, hopefully, helpful to you when you find yourself wondering what to read next.

You can expect to see the following in each of my book reviews:

  • A short synopsis. Self explanatory. Don’t worry – the synopsis won’t contain any spoilers!
  • A rating from one to five. My rating system (decidedly not a “system”) is not a perfect science. It is, however, a quick way for me to tell you how much I recommend and loved the book. Do with it what you will.
  • Content warnings. It’s very important to me that this is a place where you can feel comfortable. To do this, I’ll share any content warnings that I’ve identified from both the book and my review of the book. Please take care of yourself first and foremost.
  • My thoughts. I’ll share with you my honest opinion of the writing, how it did or didn’t affect me, and anything else that I find compelling. This will not contain spoilers.

I hope that you find value from my reviews and that they help you pick up a book more often than usual! When you finish a book that I’ve recommended, come back and chat with me about what you thought of it – I’d love to hear from you.
