Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen’s novel The Wife Between Us is the devilishly deceptive and heart-pounding story of two women’s complicated relationships with a charming and charismatic businessman.
Nellie is the antithesis of Vanessa. She’s young, beautiful, and lively, and she’s in love with Richard – another woman’s husband. Vanessa is recently separated from Richard, and she’s not adjusting well to her new life. When she was with Richard, she lived a lavish lifestyle full of delicious five-star meals, expensive clothes, luxury cars, and a beautiful home in Westchester. Now, she lives in the spare bedroom of her aunt’s apartment in the city and works part-time at Saks Fifth Avenue.
Vanessa is haunted by the new woman taking her place as Richard’s wife. In fact, she’s obsessed with her. Nellie, who has some dark secrets in her past not quickly disclosed, is extremely paranoid and frightful for her safety. She feels as though she’s always being followed.
Is Nellie safe from her past and her lover’s ex? Can Vanessa live with the knowledge that her husband has fallen in love with a new woman? But beware – nothing and no one are as they seem.

The Wife Between Us is a fantastic psychological thriller. The beginning started off a bit slow for me, but picked up and did not slow down. There are several shocking twists that I didn’t guess, that completely changed the direction and understanding of the story, and that are some of the most genius I’ve ever read.
One of my favorite aspects of this novel is the character development. Each character’s past is extremely interesting and helps to round out why they are the way they are. Nellie’s backstory is specifically intriguing and surprisingly realistic. Psychological thrillers can be outlandish at times, but The Wife Between Us is refreshingly sensible in terms of character backstory.
It’s hard to provide many details on my thoughts of the story because there is a huge twist at the end of Part One that changes the entire narrative. Again, it’s one of the most ingenious plot twists I’ve ever read, and it took extreme precision and dedication to pull off.
Other than the slow start, The Wife Between Us is a phenomenal psychological thriller and covers some very important themes, like infertility and emotional abuse. If you don’t fully understand the concept of gaslighting, you definitely will after reading this novel. I highly recommend The Wife Between Us.
