American Royals: Katharine McGee

Katharine McGee’s American Royals is the juicy and dramatic Young Adult story of the modern-day American royal family, if George Washington had opted to rule as king rather that president.

Thank you to author Katherine McGee and Penguin Kids for the gifted copy of this book!

The Washingtons have been ruling America since the 18th century. The princesses and prince have unique challenges to face as both political figures and worldwide celebrities. Beatrice, the eldest, will be America’s first queen. She takes this responsibility very seriously and is always on her best behavior. Her younger siblings, twins Jeff and Samantha, have more freedom to be themselves and get into trouble. Friendships, obligations, and relationships, and trust are tested as these young people navigate life as Royals.

My Thoughts

American Royals is such a fun ride. The premise is fascinating and is executed expertly; the world-building, while subtle, is really top notch and it’s so fun to imagine what small things in America would be different if George Washington had decided to institute a monarchy rather than a democracy.

The drama in this Young Adult novel is top-notch. We’ve got it all–affairs, betrayals, forbidden love, sabotage, oh my! The book is written from the perspective of several women in or close to the Royal family, all of whom are struggling with their own issues and drama. Their concerns are at once relatable and completely out of this world, which I really appreciated; it allowed me to feel grounded in the story, but also to really stretch my imagination and enjoy the over-the-top drama that inherently comes with royalty.

This book is the first in a series, so the problems we encounter are not nicely wrapped up into a bow by the end. I can’t wait to dive into the second book, Majesty, to immerse myself in some more top-notch drama and deceit.

Thanks so much for taking the time to read my thoughts on American Royals. I’d love to hear your thoughts on the novel in the comments or at my Instagram, @bookmarkedbya!
